The St. Augustine Record
October 11, 2009: Article in the St. Augustine Record by Anne Heymen
St. Augustine resident Marilynn Battell returns to the publishing world with her second novel, "The Crying Corpse," a continuation of her first, "Deadly Deceit." This time, fast friends Jessica Ryan, Linda Miller and Eileen Karich find themselves deep in the mysteries of "the other world" -- as a woman (Donna) who lost her life some 25 years ago comes to Jessica in a dream and appeals to Jessica to solve the mystery of her death. The mysterious death must be solved, says Donna, so she and the son she was carrying when she lost her life can finally cross over and find eternal rest.
Set mainly in New York City, Battell includes subtle -- and not so subtle -- hints of her St. Augustine connections. A brief appearance by one character bears the last name of Battell, there is reference to a jewelry store in New York City known as Nettles, and Battell, born in Orlando but a graduate of St. Augustine High School, gets a plug in for St. Augustine, the Oldest City.
A little slow in the beginning, the book quickly picks up the pace when the characters arrive in New York after Linda becomes engaged and the three visit the Big Apple to see the sights, to meet Linda's future inlaws and to check out the brownstone Linda's future husband has inherited from a beloved relative. It is also the place where Donna lost her life when she fell -- or was pushed -- down the stairs of her mother's house.
Easy to read, "The Crying Corpse" can be a comfy night's entertainment in front of a warm fire this winter -- or while basking in the beautiful Florida sun these warm fall days.
